Central Heights Church of God to host gospel group concert

The Madison-based Glory Bound Gospel group is bringing its uplifting country gospel sound to Central Heights Church of God, located at 3151 Sharon Lane, for a special performance on October 26 at 5 p.m. Known for their inspiring lyrics and heartfelt performances, the group promises an evening of joyful music and encouragement for all ages.

Although Glory Bound officially came together five years ago, the members share a much longer history in music. Lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Rob Smitha, sound engineer Mike Alexander, and lead guitarist Terry Barringer previously played together for 20 years in a country band called Country Thunder. Over time, the trio felt called to focus on gospel music instead of the country scene. “We’ve always been churchgoers,” Smitha explained. “We’d play late on Saturday nights and still make it to church Sunday morning. One day, we decided to use our talents to honor God — and that’s how Glory Bound began.”

Smitha later invited Mary Ann Phillips and Diana Harrell, both long-time church singers, to join the group as harmony vocalists. During a trip to Gatlinburg, Smitha met Joe and Barbara Spicer, who became the final additions to the band. Barbara plays piano and harmonica and also sings, while Joe handles the upright bass and bass vocals. “We’ve got everything we need — except drums, and we’re not looking for any,” Smitha joked.

Since forming, Glory Bound Gospel has performed at churches and community events across Indiana and Kentucky, released two albums, and built a loyal fan base. Though they’ve played in Columbus before, this will be their first performance at Central Heights Church of God. Their shows feature a mix of classic country gospel songs, original music, and light-hearted humor, creating a family-friendly atmosphere that leaves audiences both entertained and inspired.

Smitha said concertgoers can expect songs that will make them smile, sing along, and reflect on faith. A meet-and-greet will follow the performance. “When people tell us a song touched their heart or brought them closer to God, that’s when we know we’ve done what we set out to do,” Smitha said. “Our goal is always to lift spirits and remind people of the joy that music can bring.”
